MHAW2025 Interview with Richard from Avalon on physical wellbeing
Continuing our coverage for Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 we spoke to Richard who uses our Avalon Accommodation Service in Ashtead. Richard has been supported to attend a local gym to work on his physical wellbeing and explains how he was supported to do that by Service Manager Danny and how attending that has made him feel. He also considers barriers that exist to engaging with physical wellbeing for people living with mental distress.

MHAW2025 – Helping people who experience mental distress access physical health checks
To begin our coverage for Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 and our theme of physical wellbeing we're focussing on our service in Norfolk that supports people with Severe Mental Illness (SMI) to access physical health checks. People living with SMI are at a greater risk of poor physical health and have a higher rate of premature mortality than the general population. It is understandable that a person coping with severe mental distress would struggle to engage with and prioritise their physical wellbeing and this service looks to support them to do that and here we'll look at the innovative ways they do that and the impact that has had for the people who've used it.

Our Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 Theme: Physical Wellbeing
To celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week 2025, we will be focusing on the theme of physical wellbeing and looking at how it can impact and interplay with mental health. We will be exploring this theme through both the people who our services, and our staff and volunteers, and focussing on how people can be supported with their physical wellbeing in many different and individual ways.
