Positivity and connection as York Road celebrates 70 years
On 2nd July 2025, Together's York Road Accommodation Service proudly celebrated its 70th Anniversary with a celebration day for people who use the service, staff and professionals that refer people there.
York Road is a residential service offering specialist support to people experiencing mental distress alongside long-term challenging life experiences. The service offers comprehensive support designed to enable individuals to lead their own care and support, take control of their lives and move on to independent living. The weather was just right on the celebration day, warm and pleasant, perfect for guests to relax and enjoy the day in the garden. Conversations flowed easily and the atmosphere was filled with positivity and connection, reflecting the welcoming spirit York Road has upheld for so many years.
Service Manager Sarah Gwenzi and her dedicated team, warmly welcomed everyone and ensured the day ran smoothly. Their efforts were clear in every detail, from the kind greetings to the delicious food that was served.
Among the attendees were our CEO Linda Bryant, our ODM Richard Broad, Head of Finance Collette Hearn, Director of People & Organisational Development Laura Reine, Senior Communication Officer Martin Fewster and service managers. We also welcomed external agencies such as The Forward Trust, consultant psychiatrists, social workers, care coordinators, the FOS team manager, families of people who use the service, and many more. Together CEO Linda Bryant delivered a thoughtful speech, honouring York Road’s past and looking ahead with hope.
Two people who use the service at York Road truly touched everyone with their performances, one shared a moving personal story and the text from that speech is shared below:
I have been a resident here at York Road for nearly three years, and during this time, I have made significant progress in many aspects of my life. I truly enjoy being part of this community. The activities we engage in within the house are not only enjoyable but also meaningful, and I feel a strong sense of belonging when I take part in them.
York Road has provided me with a great deal of support, and I am genuinely grateful for the positive impact it has had on my life. I have developed strong, respectful relationships with both the staff and fellow residents, which has contributed greatly to my personal growth and overall well-being.
Since coming to York Road, my outlook on life has changed for the better. I have made healthier lifestyle choices, including going to the gym regularly and successfully losing weight. These achievements are a testament to the encouragement and stability that York Road offers.
It’s also worth celebrating that York Road has reached an incredible milestone 70 years of service. This is a remarkable achievement, and I sincerely hope that it continues to support and enrich lives for many more years to come.
Another resident lifted the mood with a lively rap that had the whole room smiling and laughing. It was a beautiful moment full of heart and joy and we’re pleased to share the text here.
The highlight of the day was the involvement of our individuals who use the service, as well as people who use services from other projects. Their participation was central to the celebration.
It was a truly special day, not just a celebration of 70 years, but a recognition of the resilience, care and strong community that define York Road. You can see a video presentation of the day below:
