Celebrating 1 year of community group for Black men in Lewisham for Black History Month

October is Black History Month and for that we’re pleased to share a video made by staff and members of the YIBO Man Group to mark 1 year of that being run by Together’s Lewisham Wellbeing Hub.

Celebrating 1 year of community group for Black men in Lewisham for Black History Month

The YIBO Man Group is a supportive and empowering space for Black men in Lewisham to explore African and Caribbean identities and cultures while sharing lived experience on issues impacting their wellbeing and resilience with peers from the community.

In the interviews contributors reflect on their own experience of joining the group, how that has benefitted their mental health and ways they have interacted with other members with insights around the value of sharing lived experience with people from similar cultural backgrounds and breaking down stigma that exists around men speaking about their mental health.

As well as being a safe space for members to share lived experiences with other Black men from the community in Lewisham the YIBO Man Group also focusses on different activities at certain meetings. Some of those activities include sharing food provided by Cummin Up Carribean Restaurant, providing hair cuts and group discussions focussed on particular topics.

Another feature of the group has been to organise trips for members to go on together. One of those trips involved members attending the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton for an informative and enjoyable day.

Together would like to thank all the members of the group for sharing their lived experiences.
