* The Mental Capacity Act: Issues in Practice 2008
*
* Together: Working for Wellbeing received funding from the Department of Health and the Social Care Institute for Excellence to run three events during Spring 2008 to continuing raising awareness of the Mental Capacity Act among people accessing and working in mental health services. This funding was received following a similar series of successful events held during Spring 2007.

We ran 3 free events on

  • Tuesday 29 April 2008 at Carrs Lane Church Centre, Birmingham
  • Thursday 15 May 2008 at Conway Hall, London
  • Wednesday 21st May 2008, Manchester

Each of these events were facilitated by a team of staff and service users. Each day began with a series of presentations that covered the following topics:-

  • An overview of the Mental Capacity Act
  • A service user perspective to the Mental Capacity Act
  • Issues facing staff
  • The relationship between the Mental Capacity Act and the Mental Health Act

Delegates were then able to attend a choice of 3 of the following workshops in order to explore the issues raised in more detail:-

  • Making an assessment of capacity
  • Making a best-interests decision
  • Communicating information
  • Planning for future care and treatment
  • Independent Mental Capacity Advocates
  • The Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act

Presentations can be downloaded by clicking on the links below. Evaluations from these events, along with the events held in 2007, can also be downloaded.

Additional resources on the Mental Capacity Act are available from the Department of Health, who have published, in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government and the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), five sets of training materials to support the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act 2005:

  • Core set
  • Mental Health set
  • Residential accommodation set
  • Community Care and Primary Care set
  • Acute Hospitals set

There is also a Mental Capacity Act update. To subscribe, e-mail mcaupdate@guardianship.gsi.gov.uk or phone 0845 330 2900.

We have also added an Assessment Tool to assist service users and their carers implement the MCA in their particular situation.  It's available to download below.
