Our partners in running this service Shropshire Social Services, Shropshire Health Authority, Shropshire Supporting People Service
Referrals accepted from Local community mental health teams and older people’s teams, self referrals

Shropshire Community-support Service was set up in 1995 to provide community support to people living across a region stretching from Cheshire to the Welsh border. Some of its clients live in isolated rural areas. Currently our service-users live within SABC and Oswestry.

What’s on offer?
The Service provides regular, planned, practical and emotional support and tenancy support. It focuses on empowering people to make their own decisions and choices whenever possible, seeing itself as a service that does things with people rather than for them.

Who uses the Service?
The Service works with around 90 people, some of whom are over the age of 65, liaising closely with three community mental health teams in the area. There are 7 (mostly part-time) staff, providing an average of over 90 hours' support each week. The service is currently free to those who use it, and people are referred to us by their community mental health team or older people’s team.

Individuals can also refer themselves, or go via their GP, Housing Options team, health professionals or any other voluntary organisation. The only criteria is needs based and people must be in receipt of Housing and/or Council Tax benefit.

People with physical-health problems
The Service supports many clients who also have physical-health problems such as some form of sensory impairment, multiple sclerosis, heart problems, spina bifida, epilepsy, arthritis or brain injury. These and other conditions may have a significant impact on an individual’s quality of life – and therefore mental health.
