Broadmoor Hospital provides care to patients with mental health needs or a diagnosis of personality disorder who require care and treatment within a high-security environment.

History
The Independent Advocacy Service at Broadmoor Hospital was set up in 2001 by Mind.  On 1st July 2006 Together took over the contract for operating the service. The Advocacy Service is independent from Broadmoor Hospital, and the contract for the service is between Together and the London Specialist Commissioning Group.

Service-user profile
The hospital has approximately 275 patients, all of whom have been detained under the Mental Health Act, and are predominantly offenders. It has three directorates: Men’s Services, Women’s Services and the Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder (DSPD) Unit.  From 2007 all women patients will have moved out of Broadmoor Hospital.

Staff and facilities
The advocacy team consists of the project manager, senior advocate and three advocates. They are based in an office on the hospital site outside the main security perimeter.

Some of the advocates have special responsibilities for women patients, diversity or older patients, but all advocates work generically across the patient groups to offer as flexible and responsive a service as possible.

All staff are key-holders at the hospital. They are required to undergo an enhanced security clearance prior to appointment and must complete the hospital’s security and induction training.

What the service offers
The Independent Advocacy Service offers a free, confidential and impartial service to all patients in the hospital.  The project provides a proactive service: advocates meet with all new patients on arrival at the hospital to introduce the service to them and to explain our role at the hospital. The advocates visit all wards every week and patients can ring or write to the service in confidence.

The service aims to enable individual patients to raise their issues, concerns or aspirations and to help in getting these addressed following the established internal and external channels in the first instance. Advocates provide information and discuss options with patients to enable them to make decisions for themselves.

For more information, contact the service direct.
