Our Future: objectives and contentOrganised jointly by Together and the Mental Health Foundation, the well-attended Our Future conference was a great success.
Chaired by Anne Beales (Head of Together's Service-user Involvement Directorate) and David Crepaz-Keay (Senior Policy Advisor, Patient and Public Involvement at the Mental Health Foundation), it covered:
- improving people's experiences of using mental health services
- facilitating links between service-user groups
- formulating principles and structures for a national service-user organisation.

Workshops enabled participants to feed back their thoughts and concerns, and there was a vote on the proposed principles and procedures for a national service-user network.
A questionnaire provided a detailed breakdown of the background, interests and skills of those attending to help ensure the effective future consultation and representation of diverse service-user groups (see 'Supporting materials and recommendations').

|Top| Debating a national network: Emily Brown
Emily Brown is Together's Deputy Director of Service-user Involvement. This is a summary of her Our Future conference presentation proposing the next steps for a national service-user network.
A national network is:
- supportive of groups by providing links between groups and individuals with similar interests
- a first point of contact for other agencies
- provider of a library of policies and documents that service-users have designed and implemented themselves
- staffed by people who keep an eye on policy; stay in touch with existing groups; keep up to date with consultations; and put positive effort into the least well-resourced groups.
A national network is not:
- a national voice for service-users
- an over-arching body that implements policy and practice
- staffed by national service-users who provide the service-user voice.
