A successful National Conference
04 December 2009
With the current implementation of the government's personalisation agenda, service user leadership is going to play a more and more prominent role.
Together believes that service user leadership at every level is critical to the success of personalisation and have made it one of our key strategic objectives. By 2014 we are aiming for all people using our mental health services to be able to fully direct their own support, and be able to access services using personal and individual budgets.
It is because of this belief that Together organised "Should Service Users Lead the Personalisation Agenda". The conference was a unique opportunity to benefit from experience gained in different contexts as well as to share points of views.
Dr Dan Fisher of the U.S. National Empowerment Center (NEC), flew over from Massachusetts to tell us how peer groups, leadership and personalisation have been central to mental health in the States during the past ten years. Dr Fisher drew on his personal experiences as an institutionalised patient before becoming a psychiatrist and an advocate of the recovery model.
Other leading practitioners in the field, all of whom have also experienced mental health issues, shared best practice and ran workshops aimed at demonstrating how people with experience must be at the centre of planning personalised services.
The event was filmed. Watch the film on our videos page, listen to the speakrs in their own words and feel their enthusiasm.
