* This exciting new booklet from Together's Service-user Involvement Directorate explores and challenges the language traditionally used to describe mental distress
*
*

Talking about Mental Health examines how common mental health issues are described by different groups including doctors, dictionary writers, and the people who experience them around the world. It demystifies medical labels, celebrates individuality and challenges stereotypes. For each condition, the book gives:

  • a dictionary definition
  • a medical definition (from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)
  • examples of what people around the world say
  • examples of what people at Together have said.

The guide is designed to support people to talk to professionals using language they feel comfortable with rather than medical jargon. For sample spreads, click at the foot of the page.

The booklet is free to individuals, £4 to organisations (plus £1 postage and packing). To order single copies of the forthcoming reprint of the guide, please fill in the electronic form below. If you are contacting us on behalf of an organisation, you can download the order form at the foot of the page and send it to us with your payment. Alternatively you can register your interest by using the online form below.
