Our partners running the service South Essex Primary Care Trust and the South Essex Partnership Trust
Approach and outlook The aim of the service is to establish and strengthen a mental health service-users’ network in South Essex. It is a social inclusion project.
Anyone who wants to join the network can self-refer. The network enables people to share their experiences of using local mental health services with their peers, service managers and commissioners, and to present a collective perspective on a range of issues.
History Together acquired the SUNRISE contract in January 2005.
Location Our work covers the South Essex area, which includes Southend, Tilbury, Grays, Rayleigh, Basildon, Brentwood, Wickford and Thurrock. We currently have an office in Southend. We are looking to centralise, by relocating in Basildon and closing the Southend office.
Service-user profile Adults who use mental health services can attend. We have approximately 300 individuals on our database. There is no time restriction on an individual’s activity within the network.
Staff and facilities A Project Co-ordinator manages the Development Workers, and supports and develops systems and structures that strengthen service-user involvement within the South Essex Partnership Trust. The Development Workers support and develop the service-user network in specific Primary Care Trusts as well as contributing to the whole of service-user involvement in South Essex.
Activities and support on offer Mental health service-user forums are held in each Primary Care Trust area in the South Essex area. They cover Southend, Rayleigh, Basildon, Brentwood and Thurrock. There is also a Women’s Forum held in Basildon. The forums are held bi-monthly.
Training The project offers a training programme to develop leadership within the local service-user involvement movement. Any other training relevant to developing an individual’s skills, knowledge and confidence around service-user involvement and representation can be supported by the project.
Links with useful organisations SUNRISE has strong links with other mental health voluntary-sector organisations. It is also developing work with the Vocational Employment Officer so that short-term administration contracts can be offered.
Opening hours Office hours are part time.
