Staff provide an individual tailored package for clients which supports their transition from using mental health services back into community-based activities.

They encourage people to become involved in employment, volunteering and leisure activities. The intention is that people recovering from mental distress and other excluded groups will become more independent and integrated into the local community.

Referrals are accepted from GPs, community mental health teams; other statutory, voluntary and community organisations, and self-referrals.

History
The service started in May 2005.

Location
The service is near local shops and transport links, and central Hastings is a 20-minute walk away.

Service-user profile
The service is open to people aged 18–65 in Hastings and the surrounding area.

Staff and facilities
There are two staff: a Project Manager and a Project Worker.

Staff liaise with professionals from Health and Social Services, voluntary and training providers, day services and local employers.

Activities and support on offer
Staff follow a three-stage programme when supporting clients to:

  • define, and work towards meeting, their personal objectives
  • use local resources effectively and access local amenities
  • discover and develop ways in which they can contribute to the local community
  • develop their personal strength and independence by taking part in suitable programmes, training and education
  • secure and retain appropriate employment or voluntary work.

The project has links with East Sussex NHS Trust and Social Services, Hastings Voluntary Action, Sure Start, Working Neighbourhoods, Lifelong Learning and local colleges.

Staff also work with local employers, trainers and tutors to provide support for specific mental health needs wherever necessary.

Training
Access to education is provided to meet people’s individual needs. Clients can be referred into local programmes such as those run by Workability or RBLI Employment Services.

Useful organisations
The service taps into local community resources, employers and adult education providers.

Opening hours
The office is open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
