| Community-support services – which offer practical and emotional support to people with mental health problems in their own homes – make a very real difference to the lives of thousands of people; supporting them to stay well and live independently in their own homes.
Together runs several community-support services across the country, each offering local people a few hours’ support each week. Staff might help with anything from going to the shops to paying bills; doing housework to getting out and about and meeting new people.
These flexible services are often very popular with the people who use them, as is documented in our report 'Changing Light Bulbs? Research into the Role of Community Support Workers in East Suffolk' (download a PDF version of this from the foot of the page).
Many of our community-support services also do more. For example:
- in Suffolk we support people with substance-misuse issues as well as mental health problems
- our Northampton service offers supported housing at Kingsley Road
- through our North Leeds Service we offer respite to the carers of people with mental health problems
- in Barnsley we support people who have been in contact with the criminal-justice system.
We have recently opened several new Supporting People services. These are community-support services that focus on supporting people to maintain their housing tenancies. Supporting People is a working partnership of local government, service-users, health, probation and support agencies, which aims to support people to live independently and maintain their tenancies. You can find out more about the programme on its website - just follow the link at the foot of the page.
Some of our care-homes, such as Kirtling House in Winchester, are extending their traditional role to offer (community-support service-style) outreach support to people living nearby who have experienced mental distress, and to any residents who subsequently move into their own homes nearby.
